There are eight million stories in the Naked City, according to the narrator of the eponymous film. Unfortunately, not all of them would make a book; the first hurdle to clear before you decide to submit a manuscript to us is to ask yourself, 'Will at thousands of total strangers be interested in paying to read my story?'
If you believe they would, and would like to submit a manuscript to us for consideration, then please take a few moments to read the following guidelines:
1. There are now two ways to publish: on traditional paper and electronically. Some books will lend themselves to one or the other; and some to both. We would discuss the options with you.
2. We really only publish non-fiction; although occasionally we have published fiction based on reality (for example, Generation F), this is unusual. There’s not much point in sending your novel to us.
3. Except in very unusual circumstances, we tend not to pay advances. We pay royalties based on the published price of paper books and the net proceeds of electronic versions (unlike traditional books, eBooks are subject to VAT).
4. Your submission should include a full synopsis and three sample chapters, including the first chapter. (By 'full synopsis', we mean between 50 and 100 words detailing what each chapter will contain.)
5. We prefer submissions to be emailed to:
However, we do not open attachments to emails so please cut and paste your submission into the body of the email.
6. If you decide to post your submission, please note that we do not return unsolicited manuscripts even if return postage is sent.
7. Please include a brief CV – we like to know a little about our authors.
8. Finally, please be prepared to wait at least a month for a response and don’t get disheartened if we reject you – The Beatles and JK Rowling were turned down repeatedly. We’re always happy to offer advice on other routes you could take.
Thank you and good luck!
